The 2014 season is upon us, and it is looking to be an exciting year!  The KYFCL was able to present $1,515.59 to the Boy’s and Girl’s Club.  This was from the proceeds of the KYFCL’s CheerFest Cheer for Charity and made possible by the hard work of the teams, coaches, cheer reps and families in the league.  I can only say, “Thank You” for those who volunteered their hard work and many hours to make CheerFest the huge success that it was for our young ladies. It was a true display of how youth sports should be conducted.

We extend a warm welcome to the North Hagerstown Junior Hubs this year. We are proud to have our friends from the south join our endeavors for fun, safe and successful football and cheerleading. “Thank you” to the Hubs for helping to expand our league.

This year the KYFCL will incorporate HEADS UP FOOTBALL (HUF) from USAFootball.com. This is not just a program to reinforce tackling techniques. It is a multi-faceted program to help us make it safer and better for our football players.  The main components are:

• Education & Certification – All football coaches will be certified by a nationally accredited course.
• Concussion Awareness – Education and information for Parents, Coaches and Players.
• Equipment Fitting – Training to make sure your player is fitted properly.
• Heads Up Tackling – Drills to re-enforce proper tackling technique without using the head.
• Player Safety Coach – These people will be tasked with ensuring the compliance with core HUF health & safety protocols within your organization. This could be YOU!
• Heat & Hydration – Education for coaches & parents to recognize, prevent and if necessary treat this safety related issue.
On the Cheerleading side – All Head Coaches of each squad will be AACCA (AACCA.org) safety certified.  This nationally recognized program helps your cheerleader’s coaches to use best practices in safety along with concerns such as physical vs. emotional readiness.  I encourage you to visit both web sites to get the latest information.

The safety of your child, our players and cheerleaders, is the #1 priority of the KYFCL as we continue to keep the KYFCL at the forefront of both youth sports.

Lastly, I want to thank the parents for involving your child in youth sports.  The life lessons learned and the memories created, along with all the other countless benefits, will help make them happier and more successful, now and in their futures.

Please feel free to contact myself or any other Executive officer with any questions or concerns.
